Journaling: The Path to Self-Discovery and Personal Growth

It’s no secret that I love to write. The act of forming sentences that provoke thought and carry wisdom is like second nature to me. There’s something powerful about how my thoughts take on new life when I put pen to paper.

Pain, once abstract, becomes tangible. Joy, once fleeting, turns vivid and alive. Flipping through old pages of my journal, I can trace the arc of my growth, and it feels like rediscovering parts of myself I once left behind.

Journaling has been a profound tool for navigating the chaos of my mind. It helps me express myself fully. Sometimes, you need to sit with yourself and pour your thoughts onto the page.

  • Name your emotions.
  • Trace their roots.
  • Define their complexities.
  • And above all, write, write, and write some more.

Then, after time has passed, sit with yourself again and read what you’ve written. Meet the person you were and the person you’re becoming.

When you do, I hope you extend grace to yourself. I hope the tangled knots inside you begin to unravel, and with that untying comes clarity.

Through journaling, I hope you’ll learn about yourself in ways you didn’t expect, and that learning prompts action—to truly care for yourself.

I use a physical journal alongside a digital one(I use it mainly when I’m travelling because I don’t ever want to risk losing my physical journal. My life is in there!). It has journal prompts that I had written for myself every time I journaled, I also added a few trackers to track habits, routines, mood, productivity and other important things.

I’ll be honest with you bestie I don’t like cluttered journals or planners, although I do want one book/tool I can use for multiple things planners that have sections and pages for EVERY SINGLE THING and unnecessary fillers make me feel clustered.

Simplicity is key for me—just a tool to keep myself on course as I navigate the seasons of life, you know!

So, bestie, I encourage you to start self-authoring too. You don’t need fancy words or elegant expressions. Just write as if you’re having a conversation with yourself.

It’s not about performance—it’s about authenticity. If you ever get stuck, journal prompts can serve as a guide, helping you dig deeper with thoughtful, and hopefully, healing questions.

How to Start Journaling for Self-Discovery: A Beginner’s Guide

If you’re new to journaling or unsure where to begin, here are some simple steps to help you start:

  1. Find a Comfortable Space Choose a quiet, comfortable spot where you can relax and write without distractions.

    This could be a cozy corner in your room or a peaceful café. I wake up at 5AM daily so I usually use the first hour to read my bible, pray and then journal.

    Then anytime during the day I feel like I have something to say or express to myself I will open my digital journal and write.

2. Choose Your Journal You don’t need anything fancy—a simple notebook will do. Some prefer digital journals, but I personally love the tactile feel of paper in the morning and at night then when I’m on the go I prefer my digital journal which I have created to look exactly like my physical journal.

3. Set an Intention Before you start writing, take a moment to breathe and set an intention.

This could be something like “I want to understand why I’ve been feeling anxious” or “I want to reflect on my day.”


4. Write Freely Allow your thoughts to flow without judgment. Don’t worry about grammar, spelling, or structure—just write what comes to mind.

You’re having a conversation with yourself, so let it be natural and honest. If you are an aesthetic person, sure stickers and sharpies can help you you make it look pretty,

but let me sternly remind you that healing is not pretty and sometimes you will simply not have the time to use the best handwriting, or to switch to a different color when that pen hits paper and you begin.

The value is in the substance of what you wrote not how it looks. So don’t be hard on yourself.

5. Revisit What You’ve Written After you’ve written for a while, come back to your journal after some time has passed. Reflect on what you’ve written, and use it as a tool for self-awareness and growth.

I am always impressed by how much I’ve grown and how much I’m so consistent with my values. Seeing how far I’ve come always inspires me to go harder and to not give up; it reaffirms me so much.
