The holidays are often seen as a time to be surrounded by family, friends, and festivities, but what if you find yourself at home or working during this time? Don’t let that make you feel gloomy or left out.
In fact, it can be the perfect opportunity to indulge in some much-needed self-care. Whether you’re avoiding the hustle and bustle or just need to recharge, you can create a cozy, calming atmosphere right where you are.
I personally love a good maintenance or self-care day on Christmas or Boxing Day. Solitude is something I cherish—don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the company of my loved ones too.
But over the years, I’ve learned the importance of balance: enjoying time with people and also taking those moments to nurture my own energy. I’ve mastered the art of leaving social events early when I feel my energy draining.
The best part about adulthood? You have the freedom to leave and create a safe, peaceful space just for you.
If you’re spending the holidays solo or need a break from the crowd, here’s my Ultimate Self-Care Guide to having a fun, relaxing day to enjoy your own company.
1. Create a Spa Experience at Home
Treat yourself to a spa day in the comfort of your own home. There’s nothing like soaking in a warm bath with a few essential oils or bath salts.
Light some candles, turn off the phone, and just let yourself unwind. If you prefer showers, go for a body scrub or an exfoliating treatment to feel rejuvenated then throw on soft cotton pyjamas and nice comfy slippers.
Follow it up with your favorite skincare routine. A face mask, moisturizing serum, and a good moisturizer will leave you feeling refreshed.
2. Brew Your Favorite Tea
There’s something so calming about sipping a warm cup of tea, especially when it’s chilly outside.
Whether you prefer herbal blends like chamomile and lavender or a good ol’ black tea with honey, this is the perfect moment to sit down and just breathe. I usually have my tea while my feet are soaking up in a warm foot bath with relaxing salts and oils.
3. Set the Mood with Music
Music has a powerful way of transforming your mood. Whether it’s the soothing sounds of a calm playlist or upbeat holiday tunes, let your music set the atmosphere. If you’re feeling introspective, try ambient or instrumental music to help you focus and relax.
5. Dive into a Good Book
Nothing beats the joy of immersing yourself in a captivating book. Find a cozy nook, grab your tea, and lose yourself in a good story.
Whether it’s fiction or a self-help book that sparks your soul, reading is a perfect way to escape and recharge.
7. Savor a Comforting Meal
Cook something simple but comforting that you truly enjoy. Whether it’s your favorite holiday dish or a nourishing soup.
8. Unplug and Disconnect
The holidays can sometimes bring pressure to be constantly connected—whether it’s answering messages or scrolling through social media. Give yourself the gift of disconnection.
Spend time off your phone, avoiding work emails, and focusing on just being. A little break from screens can do wonders for your mental clarity and relaxation.
9. Get Cozy
Create an environment that feels safe and relaxing. Pull out your softest blankets, switch on your diffuser and set the lighting low.
Maybe even try wearing your favorite pajamas or a cozy sweater. Comfort is key when you’re giving yourself the gift of relaxation. It’s all about cultivating a space that helps you feel at ease and rejuvenated.
10. Reflect and Celebrate Your Growth
Use this time to reflect on how far you’ve come. Think about your personal growth, the challenges you’ve overcome, and what you’ve learned about yourself this year. A little self-reflection can be a great way to honor your journey and set new intentions for the year ahead.
Remember, self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about listening to your body and mind, nurturing them with the things that bring you peace and happiness.
So, if you’re spending the holidays alone or need some downtime, embrace it! You deserve to enjoy your own company and recharge for the year ahead. Here’s to a fulfilling and restful holiday season!
